"Sensing" Intelligence - Internet of Things - Far Bigger Than You Even Know!

When we talk about all things internet and how our world is hyper digitally connected, it's about gathering data and leveraging it, for an IT company in Knoxville, such technological advancements are exciting. It's not just about the connection of machines to machines; nor simply the existence of data and voice systems in Knoxville and around the world; but the sensors within each machine (phone, computer tablet, and even in our brick and mortar world) that's reading and analyzing constantly what the end user is inputting and wants to be 'served' up.

Let’s look at one example. In 2007, a bridge collapsed in Minnesota, killing many people. The steel plates were inadequate to handle the bridge’s load. 

With todays connected, digital 'sensing' world, builders use smart cement: cement equipped with sensors to monitor stresses, cracks. This is cement alerting that problems need fixed before it actually happens. These technological advancements aren’t limited to just a bridge’s structure.

In some areas of the world, if there’s ice on the bridge, the same sensors in the concrete will detect it and communicate the information via the wireless internet to your car (if your car is equipped with wireless internet, which most new cars now come standard with internet connectivity). Once your car knows there’s a hazard ahead, it will instruct the driver to slow down, and if the driver doesn’t, the car will slow down for them! 

Society may not be seeing the bigger impact of all things connected and all things internet. Sensors now being implanted (no longer just in our own personal digital devices) that read data and conditions and communicate and/or alert based on these sensors within our brick and mortar world too - will lead to more advancement, opportunity and another super segment of economy.

This is a huge and fundamental shift. "Things" become intelligent, "thinking", sensing parts of our world. This is a major engine for creating new products and new services.

Project Soli: Control Your Devices without Touching Them

Have you ever wished you could control your connected devices and smartphone without even touching them? Well, Google’s innovative new project from their Advanced Technology and Projects Team, “Project Soli” could allow you to do just that. Even though we deal with data and voice systems in Knoxville every day, the ability to control them without touching them is an exciting technological development.

What is Google’s Project Soli? 

Project Soli is currently being developed by Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects Team. The entire project is based around a radar embedded into a chip that is capable of tracking human movement. Given that we are now in the age of touchscreens wherever we turn, this contactless control could become a truly novel concept.

This contactless device control is achieved through the embedding of a tiny chip – around the size of a finger nail – containing radar technology into various devices. Theoretically, this chip could be embedded into any device to allow for control. Immediately, we’re able to see the benefit of making use of this technology in smartphones, but other technology could benefit from contactless control, also.

The chip, as mentioned, contains radar technology which is capable of capturing any movement you make, including “finger micro-motions”, and interpreting that movement as input to control your connected devices and smartphones.

If you’re tempted to write this off as a gimmick, we’d urge you not to!

What are the benefits of Google’s Project Soli?

The team involved in the development of this technology, Project Soli, are incredibly excited about it, and it’s not hard to see why. The Google team is hoping for the Project Soli technology to be used in computers, wearable devices, smartphones, and implemented in virtual reality gaming. There are many benefits to using the radar to interpret your movements.

The technology is incredibly intuitive and precise, being able to interpret even the slightest movement of the human hand. The way the technology works negates the possibility of hitting the wrong button that we often experience with touchscreen smartphones and similar technology.

The Google developed technology can be used almost anywhere, as an IT company in Knoxville, we’re pretty excited about this. Although there are already cameras that work in a similar way to the radar chip, they’re very large and their accuracy can leave a lot to be desired. The Project Soli team found compressing the technology into a small enough form that it could be embedded into a chip to be their biggest challenge. The portability and small size of the chip is a massive benefit to users, both those using it for personal and entertainment reasons and industrial purposes.

There is currently no release date for the Project Soli technology, still being in the developmental stages with the Google team. The open source technology will be sent to developers in the near future, so we’re looking forward to see it in our own technology soon.
